    cradle cap

What is the best way you know to get rid of cradle cap? I'm having a heck of a time with it with DD!

    Re: cradle cap

Cradle cap-- we went through this too. We used baby oil and let DS's scalp marinate in it for about an hour while we did that we used that little comb and worked through some of the crust-- YK, the one they give you in the hospital or a fine toothed baby comb will work fine then shampooed his hair with baby shampoo (not the baby shampoo/bath-- this is very important!!!) After that use baby shampoo not all in 1 stuff. I did notice that after I treated DS with the oil and reg baby shampoo then went back to the all-in -1 the CC would come back-- finally I chucked the all in 1 and didn't have a problem.

OH! That must be my problem! I've been using the all in one stuffTongue Tied [:S]

That must be why I haven't had any luck getting rid of it despite all the combing and washing! Thanks Katrina!

    Re: cradle cap

We went through cradle crap too. (hehe)

I bought some Gerber 3-step shampoo, it included something like baby oil, shampoo and lotion with a comb. Shortly after that it disappeared, although I'm not sure if that was the solution or if it was destined to end anyway, as we had it for a long time.

    Re: cradle cap

I'll have to keep an eye open for that too...I hope we don't have it for a long time! DS never had a problem with it, but I know, different baby, different set of problems Smile [:)]!

    Re: cradle cap

I used the gentle naturals eczema wash, helped a lot! That and the combing/scraping off...but we also battled it a lot longer due to milk sensitivitesSad [:(]

    Re: cradle cap

On my ped's recommendation (and after I dragged my feet for a while, 'cause oil and combing out had been good enough for DC1's cradle cap.. totally not cutting the mustard with DC2) I used Nizoral shampoo on DC2... available over the counter but I reckon I would not use it without checking with a ped first.  It worked well!

I agree, baby shampoo rather than the all-in-one stuff.

    Re: cradle cap

Other than appearnces, is there any harm to them having cradle cap? Dd has had it since birth, but seems to come and go and I've yet to notice it bothering her.

    Re: cradle cap

I  think that it might be irritating to baby-- YK like itchy, like dandriff is to us parents. AND maybe painful sometimes as we parents fiddle with their little heads and scratch off the flakes, KWIM? I can remember scratching off some scales from DS's head and there was a red mark (like when you peel off a scab) left. I can also remember if I did not use oil before I combed off some scales he would fuss so I think that the fiddling might hurt sometimes.

    Re: cradle cap

My lactation consultant told me olive oil was good to cure just about anything - and she was right!

We used it on ds' cradle cap. I have also used it on my nipples to prevent cracking, ds' extremely dry skin and my own dry skin. It's great stuff :)

    Re: cradle cap

she was very very right oilve oil is even good for ear infections or swimmers ear  you warm some in a plasic baggin in your hands till its at body temp then pour it in the ear and whalla  the next day no more pain and the red and swell is gone my ganny used it on all us kids growing up

oh also coconut oil for dry skin or skin irritations and greatest for cradlle cap   and if you have a child with thick africana hair like my daughter  you can use it like hair lotion it keeps the hair from getting dry and breaking

    Re: cradle cap

yeah, my ds has thick hair that's DRY DRY DRY. Not quite the African hair that my dh has, but it's by no means soft. The olive oil fixes that right up! Makes it nice and shiny too :)

    Re: cradle cap

Well...we might have to try the olive oil after all. The shampoos and brushing have worked a bit, but maybe the olive oil will do the trick. DD has lost a lot of hair in the last couple of weeks. Poor little balding head for the winter (LOL). So her hair is pretty thin and it is fine and red (so the olive oil may make it a little "oily" but if it takes care of it it'll be worth it!).

Thanks ladies for all of your suggestions!!!
