Attached to Baby

    Recently my husband and I have considered homeschooling.  We have a 12yr old, 6yr old and our 5mth old.  Do you think it's too late to start homeschooling our 12yr old?  And if we decide to homeschool how do you go about it...neither my husband nor I were homeschooled so we are completely clueless on that subject!

No! My mom started homeschooling me at 12. It's a great age to start. Before they get sucked into the highschool teenager attitude thing. Search the net because there are lots of homeschool programs out there

Go to the library and start checking out books! I stilll do this even after hsing for a year. I'm always picking up new ideas. Linda Dobson has lots of helpful bks and Cathy Duffy has a great book on choosing curriculum.

Be prepared for your head to swim but you'll start to find things that sounds good pretty quickly. There's a book called "The big bk of Homeschooling" I think and it describes all the different "types" of teaching or education styles. This might be helpful to see what type of style you fall into and this will help you narrow your search for curriculum.

Check for local hs groups-they are a wealth of info!

Summer is time for hs conferences-check to see if there are any in your area. This will give you a chance to look thru lots of curriculum first hand.

No age is too old. In fact, lots of people pull their kids around the 12 yrs mark since that's a big turning point for kids. Be prepared for a few months of "deschooling" where the kids just have to decompress and get out of the school mentality.

I agree with Ann: get to a conference if you can!  But do a little research first, so you know what types of curriculum you are looking for.  There is simply thousands of choices out there and they will all claim to be "the best".   You know your children best, do what you think will work for your family ... and then be prepared to tweek things a bit as you get going ... planning is always a bit different than the doing phase

I will second the "deschooling" time that will be needed ... and don't expect to "do school" at home.  You don't need a black board, wall charts, and desks ... you need a mom who loves spending time with and  learning right along side her children.
