Almost 4 and not potty trained?

My oldest will be 4 in march, and he will not use the potty.  He knows how to do it, and he has done it every once in a while, but he won't do it more than 2 times a day.  Anyone have any advise on getting him to actually use it.

My son was almost four when he finally dropped the diapers - no worry - dont stress. They will quit in due time! What made mine quit was somehting as trivial as peer pressure, believe that. Kids at daycare teased him and he came home and said he was done!

So, I would just let it go and let him take it in his own pace!

Re: Almost 4 and not potty trained?

My son was potty trained in Sept. and turned 4 Nov. 25th. I was so embarrassed!!!! We literally tried everything. It really wasn't until he started preschool that he got it. His bladder wasn't ready until Aug. My dr. said they had to go at least an hour to start trying, 2 hours is best. Anders could make it about 1/2 hour so we just stopped trying for a while. Then it all clicked and he got it. Hang in there. I was seriously worried he would go to kindergarten in a pull up.

My bigest problem with it is that he wants to go to preschool, and none of the schools here will let him gp to school in a pull up.  He has to be completely potty trained.  He didn't go to preschool this year because of it, and I really want him to go this fall.

I bet ya he will be potty trained by Sept. Have you talked to your Dr. about it. I brought Anders to the Dr. in Sept right before he trained. It was interesting to listen to Anders tell the Dr. why he didn't use the toilet. He told her "my poop jumps away when I sit on the toilet". She talked to him and it really helped. Our Dr. is very calm and sensitive, I think it helped to have someone beside me talk to him. You could sign him up for preschool and I am sure it will all work itself out.

Re: Almost 4 and not potty trained?

I haven't gone through this yet as my daughter is only 18 months however my sister was the same problem with her son recently. He would go intermittently and tell her when he needed to go on some days but then on other days he'd just go up to her and say "i went potty, change me." Finally after awhile of this on/off potty usage she talked to him and told him that all the diapers in his drawer were the last ones they had. Once they were gone they were gone. Prior to this they had gone and he picked out fun little boy underwear with his favorite cartoon character on it. She made a big deal out of every time he used the potty and when the day came when they used the last diaper that was that. Every time he'd ask for a diaper she'd direct him to the old "diaper drawer" and tell him that they were all gone. She did have a few days with several accidents but he picked it up completely them within a week He was nearly 4 by the time he was trained and she had to clean up a few accidents but it worked for them.

Good luck and I'm sure it will all work out when he's ready to do it.

Re: Almost 4 and not potty trained?

I don't have any wisdom for you, but wanted to offer my support. My son was 3 in September and is not potty trained. About 6 weeks ago he went for the first time and the potty and did pretty well for several weeks. For the past 10 days he has been on a potty training strike and wants nothing to do with it! Angry [:@] Anyway, I asked some advice on another forum and everyone said you just have to let them do it in their own time. I know that's so frustrating to hear. I just hope they're right! Good luck. You're not alone...

Re: Almost 4 and not potty trained?

Thanks everyone.  I guess I'll just keep reminding him and hope he decides to do it.  He goes to the doctor the end of March for his 4 year check up, I'll ask the doctor about it then.  Thanks.
