Dating occurs when a preteen or teen takes an interest in another person, and wants a relationship that offers more than just friendship. This is often the process of your child developing into their own person, and they are ready to spend time with someone outside of a group setting. The age when teens want to date can vary depending on a variety of things, and many will have a different opinion of what dating means.
As teenagers start to become physically attracted to others, this may be when they decide they are interested in dating. This process may also start because of social pressure, or a desire to fit in and be like others. A young girl may discover that a certain boy makes her laugh or smile, or a young man may find that he likes the way a girl is his class smells or looks.
For some teens, and many who are just starting to date, this may just mean talking on the phone and hanging out at school or social events. The two people may hold hands, write notes, and walk together in the halls, but they don’t have a serious or sexual relationship in any way. At the preteen age, dating can be something that the kids say they are doing, and claiming a boyfriend or girlfriend is more of a symbol than an actual relationship.
The older the teen gets, the more pressure there will be with dating, and the more selective the teen may become with their choices. The teenager may also develop a stronger interest in people as they get older, having a stronger desire to have a boyfriend or girlfriend.
As the teenager gets older, they may be more focused on commitment or more sexually advanced relationships. As the teen gets comfortable with dating, or interacting with people they are attracted to, the relationship may start to develop to one on one date nights without others, kissing, and more. It’s important for all teens to understand the seriousness of their actions sexually and socially.
Teenage couples can quickly become attached to the person that they are dating, and they may start to withdraw themselves from their friends, extracurricular activities and more. If the relationship were to end, they could have lost friends, suffered academically and more. Parents must be strict on setting guidelines with time restrictions, academic expectations, and sexual limitations.
It isn’t always possible to monitor a teenager, and all teenagers should know the consequences of all sexual actions. Sexual activities can lead to many different sexual diseases, pregnancy, injury and more. Teens must know how important it is to wait until they are mature and responsible enough to be sexually active, and that sex can wait.
Dating is going to be something different to many teenagers, and all parents should know who their teen is dating, what their teen is doing on their dates. The more interested and attentive the parent is, the easier it is for the parent to monitor the situation.
