OK I posted this yesterday under the wrong category. I was also embarassed, but today they smelled again. So I am posting to get some help. My ds diapers have a strong amonia smell. Is it his age, more concentrated urine, or what? I have stripped my diapers and it did not make a difference. Has anyone cloth diapered a toddler? Did you experience this amonia smell? I really did not notice a differece with my other 2 in disposibles.

There was a thread about this on mothering and they posters said that when that happened you are using to much detergent.

But if you stipped them then i don't know....

I use cloth on both my 2 year old and 5 month old. I only get the strong ammonia smell with the 2 year old when we are using hemp inserts. hemp is absobant but really stinky

Yes most of my diapers are hemp. I have various diapers, most are fleece topped with hemp of some sort in them. What do you do? I feel like my child stinks.

I only use the hemp inserts at night or at home when we aren't expecting company. Seriously, I can smell wet hemp a mile away and I don't know if there is any way to get it to stink less. I've tried the baking soda, I've tried the vinegar. I have just decided that hemp stays at home and we use the cotton or microfiber when we go out.

I know you would rather have a less smelly solution but I just don't know how to get the stink out of hemp.

I talked to a veteran cloth diaper mom today. She said toddler urine is just more amonia smelling. It is more concentrated than an infants urine. She also mentioned trying to change him more often. He has been good about telling me when he has gone to the bathroom so that does help.
