    Distracted baby - help!

My seven month old son is becoming very distracted by anything going on around him while he is nursing. It's becoming very difficult to nurse him and at times I resort to pumping and letting him suck on a bottle. He looks around constantly - so he keeps on stopping nursing and keeps looking around. I think the reason he does okay with the bottle is because he can turn his head around and bring the bottle with him. The only time I am successful in nursing him lately is when he is asleep and first thing in the morning. I never had this problem with my daughter - does anyone have any suggestions? At home I can go into a quiet room and it sometimes helps, but that isn't always possible when I am out of the house. And we are going on a family vacation in a week and I want the ease of breastfeeding rather than having to go to the hotel to pump. I try to make it as quiet as possible, but if anyone has any other suggestions, that would be great!

My ds would never nurse in public, and had troubles nursing away from home because he was always too busy looking around. The one thing that helped was a nursing necklace. I got one of those chubby toy ones and he really liked that. It only worked about half the time, though. I never did figure out any other ways to keep his attention on ME!

At home, we go into a boring dark corner where it's quiet and he'll nurse just fine there.

    Laura,

It is probably a phase. You may want to try to go to a boring, dark place as pp suggested until your ds gets through the phase.  It should pass though, hang in there!

My DD has been doing this more and more lately.  She is also almost 7 months.  I often have to go to a quiet place with her.  I also recently purchased a nursing necklace from ATB and she enjoys playing with it, too.  Have you tried one to see if maybe that would hold your baby's attention?  I'm afraid I don't have too much other help to offer.  I know I have a friend who has this issue with her DS also.  He WILL NOT nurse in public anymore and sometimes even at home in a quiet place he just doesn't want to have anything to do with it.  She just has to go with his schedule I think.
