Limit on file size of photos??

Is there a limit on the file size for photos?  I was trying to upload photos of us in our new Zolowear RS we just got yesterday and it goes through the motions like it is uploading the photo, but then there is a delay and I get an error message.  I am working with a new digitial camera and currently have it set to take the best quality picture, so the files are pretty large.

Hmmmm... I don't think so. People have uploaded outrageous file sizes. Do you want to email me one of your photos so I can see if I can upload it to your gallery, to troubleshoot?

I never had a chance to get back on the computer this weekend.  Let me give it one more try sometime in the next few days and if I still can't get it, I will e-mail you one so you can check it out for me.  Thanks!!   I want to get up our pictures in our new slings I got with our gift certificate. I tried again today.  I still can't get large ones loaded (about 3MB).  I did get some smaller ones loaded, but after a couple I started getting the site error again.  I was going to e-mail you, but it looks like when I try to e-mail from the forum that I can't send an attachment.  Am I just not seeing it or should I e-mail you another way?

    Thanks for your help!!

I prefer not to have huge files over 3mb uploaded to the site, as we're actually running out of space now. But I did change a setting that will allow you to, do you want to try one more time?

Hmmm....I hate to upload files so large if you would prefer not to have them on the site.  I totally understand the space issue.  In fact, the most recent ones I have taken are still on my camera because I want to make them smaller before pulling them off so I can then load them on here.  Let me just see if I can find a way to make the ones I already have on my computer smaller.  Thanks!!

Actually feel free to try it.

I need to get more hard drive space somehow soon anyway. :)

Okay.  I'll try to take a stab at it this weekend and see how it goes.

Angele, is there a way for us to erase pictures? That might help free up some space for you also

Re: Limit on file size of photos??

The fastest approach to saving space needs to be done "on the server". There are some tricky factors involved in preserving tags...I don't know enough about the back end of the database to know what is entailed, but the following may be a step in the right direction.

First, back everything up in case this screws things up.

Second, decide maximum file size permissable.

Third, search for all photos larger than that maximum size. For archival purposes, copy them out to a different hard disk, but not to make them publicly available.

Fourth, set up an action in Photoshop, using the "Record new action" thing, by which you "record" everything you do to one photo. What you would do is:

    1. Resize the image, preserving aspect ratio, to a maximum width or height. I would pick a standard maximum width or height and not worry about wide/tall photos... make it largish and it really won't matter that much.

    2. Save over the existing jpg file (same filename) but to a standard medium or low-end-of-high quality compression.

    3. Close the file.

Now... open as many of the searched photos as you can without crashing the computer. A really hot system will manage to open between 50-80 large photos, max, probably less if they're as big as all that.

Go to "batch process" and select the action you just made and select "opened files" and put "destination folder" as none.

     Then, make it so.

It will automatically resize all the opened photos.

    Re-search.

    Pick another batch.

    Do it again.

There are other ways of doing this, but I suspect that this will keep the photos where they are supposed to be. It's a starting point.
